What is an Area Test Center?

Area Test Centers are established by State Departments of Education for the purpose of testing career and technical education teachers and teacher candidates.

What are the benefits of teacher testing?

• Certify technical teacher competence
• Screen potential technical teachers
• Obtain credit or advanced standing in educational programs
• Develop skills certificate programs

What are the qualifications for Area Test Centers?

• Must be designated by the State Director of Career and Technical Education
• Must have suitable facilities (shops and laboratories) available when needed for test administration
• Must be geographically located so as to be easily reached by potential candidates and examiners
• Must be able to obtain satellite facilities around the state when necessary
• Must be willing to accept candidates from contiguous states or parts of such states
• Must designate a coordinator for the center and will have examiners for both the written and performance part of the NOCTI examinations

What are the qualifications for the Center Coordinator?

• Must be authorized to carry on all functions of the NOCTI program which relate to test administration within the center’s geographic area of responsibility
• Must be a state supervisor, local supervisor or a teacher trainer who meets certification requirements in career and technical education
• Must have support services and other resources available to fulfill his/her responsibilities
• Must have the understanding of the employer as to the need for professional cooperation within the region
• Must be able to secure and train competent examiners
• Must be able to attend a bi-yearly Coordinator Training Workshop

How do I set up my testing program?

• NOCTI staff will work with centers to help create a testing program.
• NOCTI provides training materials for coordinators, proctors and evaluators.
• Test Center Coordinators around the country are available as resources for creating a quality testing program.
