Connecticut Comprehensive High
Connecticut Career and Technical Education (CTE) is committed to high quality career and technical education programs which are a critical component in the process of enhancing academic achievement in the comprehensive secondary schools of the state. CTE courses are electives with a wide array of course titles in Connecticut’s high schools, however all CTE courses have a curricular foundation -- the Connecticut CTE Performance Standards and Competencies.
The foundation of the statewide CTE assessment program is clearly defined performance standards and competencies that have been specifically aligned with existing CTE national standards. The Connecticut State Department of Education, along with educators and business/industry representatives, developed the performance standards and competencies for each of the seven CTE instructional programs that include 19 areas of concentration. Over 94% of all Connecticut public high schools participate in the Statewide CTE Assessment program. The statewide CTE assessment program has continued to grow on an annual basis increasing concentrators and incrementally increasing skill proficiency. Over 9000 assessments are administered annually in over 135 secondary schools.
Local high school results in the state CTE assessment are an important factor in the selection of high schools for program compliance and mandated professional development. The assessments are an invaluable tool to support and facilitate student learning by providing meaningful information regarding focused instruction on performance standards and individual student acquisition of competencies.
The program is managed by the Bureau of Early Childhood,
Career and Adult Education, under the coordination of Dr. Stephen W. Hoag,
(860-713-6764).
