Connecticut Technical High Schools

The Connecticut Technical High School System (CTHSS) has developed a statewide assessment program that is administered in their 18 Technical High Schools and managed by the Central Office of the Connecticut Department of Education. The program is based on the use of NOCTI assessments for their trade/technology programs. The CTHSS began testing in 2000 with three assessment titles and has expanded to 23 assessment titles in 2005. Each successive year, trades have been added with the eventual goal of expanding the assessment to all trade/technology education programs offered in the CTHSS.

Test results are shared with the school administrative team and all of the technology teachers involved in the NOCTI trade/technology assessment. Administrative staff is responsible for ensuring that the School Improvement Plan Team and appropriate staff review the data in order to identify potential areas for improvement and create an action plan with specific strategies to address them for each trade/technology program assessed. Each school uses the data, along with the other data received, for evaluation purposes at the school, program and student levels. The results of the evaluation are used to drive changes in curriculum and instruction that, over time, is intended to increase student achievement. As needs are identified, the CTHSS can work with schools for resource allocation to update and increase the skill levels of teachers, as well as to identify new approaches to teaching and learning.
