FAQs

What is a micro-credential?

Micro-credentials are short, focused measures of a distinct set of knowledge and skills within an occupational area. Assessment formats vary by micro‑credential. Some use multiple-choice items to measure competency, while others involve performance tasks to show applied skill.

Are these the same as the micro-credentials previously offered?

NOCTI’s new micro-credentials feature a sharper focus on specialization, workforce relevance, and flexible assessment options. They are designed to be more targeted, and aligned to real-world skill verification.

Are micro-credentials the same as certifications?

Micro–credentials verify a single, targeted area, while certifications measure a broader set of knowledge and abilities. Micro–credentials are focused credentials that complement—not replace—full certifications by highlighting specific strengths.

Who can earn a micro-credential?

Anyone looking to verify a specific competency or skill. Micro–credentials are ideal for students, job seekers, returning workers, career changers, current employees, and professionals seeking advancement.

How long does it take to complete a micro-credential?

They’re designed to be quick and flexible. Most can be completed in a short time frame, making them perfect for just–in–time learning, targeted upskilling, and fast workforce training needs.

How are micro-credentials used?

Learners use them to stand out to employers, strengthen résumés, demonstrate readiness for new roles, and highlight areas of expertise. Organizations use them to support onboarding, professional development, targeted training, and verification of role–specific knowledge and skills.

Do learners receive something to show they earned it?

Yes. Upon successful completion, learners receive a digital credential—a shareable badge that can be added to résumés, e–portfolios, social profiles, or job applications.

Can individuals earn more than one micro-credential?

Absolutely. Learners can earn multiple micro-credentials to showcase a broader range of knowledge and skills. Each micro-credential highlights a specific area of expertise, allowing individuals to build a personalized portfolio of achievements that demonstrates their strengths and ongoing commitment to professional growth.
